It was completely eye opening for me as well when Delpit gave the example about how black children expect to have an authority figure, and that it causes miscommunication between teacher and student. I almost feel like with education today, we are taught as teachers to ask "Is that where the scissors belong?" instead of "Put the scissors on the shelf." I never thought how this could be a miscommunication, but Delpit is completely right!!Alisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00881425762418784910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462199839048139867.post-4566840161969344702011-05-31T19:56:40.649-07:002011-05-31T19:56:40.649-07:00Hi Kelly, This article also made me think of the w...Hi Kelly, This article also made me think of the way I speak to my students. I never thought that a simple question, like that of the scissors could pose a problem when asking requests within my class. It now will make me think and process the ways my students react towards specific questions.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462199839048139867.post-51183133616050279232011-05-30T08:15:28.160-07:002011-05-30T08:15:28.160-07:00Kelly, I enjoyed reading your post. Great idea!! <br />As you mentioned in your blog, Delpit gave us an example about an East Indian man and his unsuccessful interview. She believed that if the power of white people would have been recognized it would have ultimately lead to more honest, open and direct communication. By relating the reading to your life, we can see that the issues discussed in Delpit's text are still current and will be until everyone of us, white and all colors, start to act to improve education.Marcia Silvahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07657816011675614363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3462199839048139867.post-71805205056025935572011-05-29T09:21:52.998-07:002011-05-29T09:21:52.998-07:00I like your selection of quotes, as I am reading y...I like your selection of quotes, as I am reading your blog I see I had chosen one of the same for my quotes blog. I like the way you related the quotes to the text as well as to your own life. I related to your perspective in the section about the authority figure.brigettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12440705173064834571noreply@blogger.com
